    1. He wasn't trying to make money. Disney confirmed he wasn't allowed to monetise it, he posted it without ads to contribute to his own revenue, and Disney went in and placed ads on his product. LucasFilm Ltd used to run more fairly. You paid a stipend to access the characters and established content, but were allowed to make money of your own original ideas inside the SW canon. Then Disney came along, bought it, and runs it with their corporate iron fist and doesn't allow for the expansion of content from other artists that once made Star Wars great.

    2. This is exactly how Lucasfilm has functioned long before Disney.

Lucasfilm has always aggressively defended their copyright and trademarks. AS THEY SHOULD.

  3. Did you even listen to what dude was saying in the video?

  4. What if someone continues the Nolanverse? Since he concluded the movie and decided there wont be another one made for that universe. Can DC claim a fan films revenue if the universe is discontinued?

  5. Makes me sick, I thought Star Wars was still safe to make Fan Films. There are soooo many star wars fan films out there. and the way CBS\Paramount has screwed up how people can make Star Trek fan films. As long as these fan films are "Not for profit" why should it matter how they are made, how they are funded. How about a new hash tag movement ... #STOPTHEGREED

    1. It is safe. No one is stopping him from making these.

He isn't profitting, as Disney told him he couldn't. But that doesn't mean they can't put their own stamp on it saying "this uses our content" and benefit themselves.

Hurts no one. This is not taking anything away from his work or his effort. He says multiple times that this is not about the money - but then cries that they actively went out of their way to monetize and make money off THEIR PROPERTY.

  6. Disney has to control it's intellectual properties. If more people saw that there was opportunity to create their own version of something Disney owned, and profits off of it, Disney would effectively lose control of that property. Since Disney owns Star Wars, they have a right to profit from anything that is created as Star Wars media. At the least, it will discourage others from infringing on the property. I do want to see episode 2, but I understand why Disney is doing what they're doing.

  8. Hey Disney! Dude made a better starwars film than the director you hired for the last Jedi! Hire him

  9. I don't get this, he sought permission from them. WTF is this for real

  10. Disney is just butt hurt that you made something that the fans loved and they can't create their way out of a paper bag!

    1. Yup, big corporate empire just butt hurt. It's always like that. If my own screenplay I'm writing ever gets anywhere, I'm not selling to a company, not ever. I don't care how much money they throw around. Money isn't important to me. That's one thing that makes me different from George Lucas.

    2. Jonathan, you might want to actually look into George Lucas. He never sold his works to a company, and fought for the money to make his own movies his own way. He formed his own company based entirely on THAT EFFORT.

Yeah, you are all about the art. Just like this guy who spent $100k making a fan film and is now butthurt that Disney is making money off it. ITS THEIR PROPERTY. He wouldn't have a film if he wasn't ripping into their IP.

They let him have his film. His art is safe.

Disney has every right to monetize something that is made using their copyright.

  12. Not sure what the big deal is here. He used star wars music without permission and they have filed a claim, which means any profits earned by the video, go to Disney. They could have suggested he stole intellectual property, and insisted the video is removed entirely, but they haven't.

I run a weekly star wars podcast. Every episode that gets released to youtube (we no longer bother) had a claim made against it for using star wars music as part of our remixed show title music. We didn't mind them making the claim - quite rightly, its their music right. The guy who made that vader fan film, had the video funded by his fans, so he's already in profit. Would love to understand why he thinks he's being treated unfairly. Yes, I am kind of referencing Vader there.

    1. He didn't crowdfund this film at all.

Still, Disney has the right to claim copyright over this.

He is crying because he went to Lucasfilm and asked if they would allow him to fund the movie - but not profit - either through a donation from them or a crowdfunding effort. He was denied both. Then they decide to profit off his film.

I don't feel bad for him. They are entirely in their rights to do this.

  13. That he had PERMISSION to make this passion project, but there's rules. They said he could do it if it wasn't crowdfunded, and it cannot be monetized.

It's not vindictive, it's not rude, its not about the "pennies" he is crying over (since they are so rich he deserves to steal their work?)

They have a responsibility to take ownership of THEIR PROPERTY. He followed the rules and put out this movie because he was passionate. He claims its not about the money but gets butthurt that they claimed copyright over material and works that infringe on their copyright.

They could have had the whole thing deleted, taken him to court (which even if they lost would cost him poodoo moneys) but they let him have his fun, have his fan film and now they own the benefits off it.

This is not rocket science. It's the law. If they ignore this and let everything slide they set precedent that they cherrypick their enforcement. That's the law.
